Picking up those brushes again.

Hi and welcome to the occasional mutterings of Dave Doc, a military modeller and some time gamer. Gaming and model making has given me a real education, History & Geography(obvious really), Artistry, Politics, Economics, Logistics, Project Management -you try building miniature armies without the last 3.

I will use the blog to record my creations & the odd occasion I actually do some gaming.

I have always been inspired by the aesthetic side of gaming. Playing on well constructed terrain using excellently painted units is always a joy.

Gaming - Nam

Martin and I managed to get another couple of games in today that did a bit of scenario play testing. A village search , and a landing zone with a seek and destroy. Martin has been busy tweaking the few -ages of rules and they are getting there for simplicity.

So this chicken infested village would turn out to have tunnels all round , and caches of arms all over .

We never quite know where the scenario will lead as it get random event driver . The malevolence of the dice was indeed on display today with reapeted rolls that added VC reinforcements in the same place each time , and then turning up a full platoon from the tunnel. The Marines were in the village and not able to call in fire support due to closeness of the enemy .

Where the hell did they come from

There was some excellent shooting from the Marines with a huge enemy body count … they had captured a VC prisoner and the village headman . They were extracted and the Marines bugged out .

Game 2 was a landing at a jungle clearing to explore the length if the table. Immediately on landing the Marines came under mortar fire which while not causing injuries did pin two fire teams and the commander.  VC were seen on the hill overlooking the LZ… hang on a lot of VC after yet more dice malevolence.

Again Marine shooting was effective , but this time they were taking casualties light and series
Urgent fire support was called for which fortunately landed quickly and on target blowing chunks out of the VC.
The foremost fire team unpinned themselves and was able to retreat back to the main body as the next lot if artillery landed.

This mission wasn’t going anywhere - it had turned into casualty evacuation . The choppers turned up just in time ..

A couple if good games .

Gaming - 7DTTR.

There hasn’t been much hobby time lately , so I took the opportunity of the 3 day weekend to squeeze a small one in as Martin and Angus were both free. I set up a meet with my French and Soviet forces for 7 days to the Rhine .

We managed 2 games after turning it round after Martins Soviets quickly overrun the French defenders who had set up too far back and with the loss of their 3 AMX30 MBTs in quick succession the French bugged out to save their Infantry . We turned it around and swapped sides . Martin had learnt from Angus’s mistake and deployed 2 Milan teams and supporting infantry further forward. This caught the initial Soviet recce force early and hard. At this point Martins Milan dice were on Fire and so were the advancing vehicles and Angus proceeded to roll 1’s for activation stopping his teams advancing - and they were able to be picked off again. The Soviets eventually chased the French off the forward hill but as they rounded it they encountered the AMX30s who followed the high dice rolls of the Milan’s . Comrade Angus is heading to a gulag somewhere right now .

French tasked to defend the village for 6 turns

A reasonably fast paced few games . A few things we git wrong in hindsight  but they didn’t really have that much impact in the end we thought . Overall fun was had , it was good to get a game in .
