Picking up those brushes again.

Hi and welcome to the occasional mutterings of Dave Doc, a military modeller and some time gamer. Gaming and model making has given me a real education, History & Geography(obvious really), Artistry, Politics, Economics, Logistics, Project Management -you try building miniature armies without the last 3.

I will use the blog to record my creations & the odd occasion I actually do some gaming.

I have always been inspired by the aesthetic side of gaming. Playing on well constructed terrain using excellently painted units is always a joy.

Zulu Wars. British Artillery

It has been a productive weekend , with just varnishing and last touches to bases meaning a number of items are now finished!. I was suitably inspired after doing the Rorkes Drift characters that having found this set I got earlier in the year I decided to complete it. The gun model is a finely detailed piece of equipment - and a total pain to assemble! But once done it painted up nicely. I have gone for a double basing option with the gunners individually based , but  done so they can be put onto a a textured base which has wheel ruts etc for the gun, It gives different options. All figures etc by Empress Miniatures. The blues for the gunners is the ever reliable Andrea Color blue set..

7lb gun & crew

9lb gun & crew with base

Or the option without the main base

So it is back to cowboys and buildings next

  1. Nicely done Dave; a great bit of kit that. I had a go at the 7lb variant some time ago; lovely looking but very fiddly.

    1. Thanks - it is an octagon tho - for aesthetic reason , makes supporting units easier to butt up to it i think..

    1. aah its an octagon!! try drawing it out - it means infantry butt up against it 90 degress to make the gun form the angle of a square - and it still looks neat! - i will get a picture up when i get some infantry painted

  10. Really like the contrast between the dusty dull look of the gun and the colour of the men, really adds that bit more to the model

  15. Superb painting and another great backdrop that really sets the scene.

I was going to post my Zulu War British artillery on my blog tonight but I might have to hold off on this for a while, having seen yours.

I was watching ebay with the Zulu War stuff you put on this week, congrats with the price you got for them, well deserved.
