Picking up those brushes again.

Hi and welcome to the occasional mutterings of Dave Doc, a military modeller and some time gamer. Gaming and model making has given me a real education, History & Geography(obvious really), Artistry, Politics, Economics, Logistics, Project Management -you try building miniature armies without the last 3.

I will use the blog to record my creations & the odd occasion I actually do some gaming.

I have always been inspired by the aesthetic side of gaming. Playing on well constructed terrain using excellently painted units is always a joy.

Gaming - Back of Beyond at Partizan with The League

This weekend was the usual May visit to Partizan . I was gaming with the good guys from the League of Extraordinary Kriegspielers. Steve and Rory had set up a cracking 20 foot table with lots of action on it as a result of the usual devious scenario work . I was playing the Bolshevik commander out to spoil Der Barons day .

Mountains one end and down to the Chinese river town .

All pictures credited to Steve L .

Steve has a wonderful collection with lots of eye candy . It’s a privilege to be asked to play with it .

My dice were reasonable over the day . The 7 consecutive 1’s were then immediately off set by 5 hits out if 6 shots . Non of my vehicles broke down either.

My Bolo plan of working with Chinese almost worked until a last minute stab in the back by Perfidious Albion - drat! Lots of laughter and I will have my revenge !

I was that busy over the day I saw little of the show , though did chat with a number of people through the day . I  didn’t have any shopping planned as I am working through existing stash this year and downsizing some collections to relieve storage issue . I had a good session selling on the bring and buy so that making some space in the cave.

Back of Beyond - Railway Militia and Cheka

The latest top up for my Bolos are more of the Eureka factory militia to use for my Railway guys , and some various SMG armed Partisans  to use for my Cheka.

That takes me up to 20 Factory militia with the last lot .

Good swift service from Eureka once more . The Ppsh armed guys are a little late for the period but they will do for now .

I continue to be on top of this project which is nice . Everything I have sourced for the Brits and Bolos  is painted. . I have ordered some guys to use for Trotskys train guards in the glorious red uniforms . I have more Afghans in the pile , I would also  like some suitable Japs in due course .

I am keeping a look out for a few more Copplestone cavalry , and my own plane .

In the meantime the Caspian Seawitch has reached dry dock for fitting out .

Back of Beyond - Bolsheviks - the Siberians

This weeks painting has been the last lot of Copplestone Bolsheviks in the stash  . Greatcoats  and fur hats . As ever they are really easy to paint .

These will be fighting in our ongoing campaign shortly . My far east Bolos are fighting the Japanese who have invaded North of Vladivostok. This takes me to over 100 foot.

I have a further out with Eureka to top up the factory worker militia which should arrive this week.

The plan is to run a really big game in November at the local Battlegrouhd show .

Terrain. Extra winter roads and trees

With a really warm and sunny day today I took the opportunity to make the extra winter roads I want for a game at the end of the month . I had also found the missing box of conifers that needed snow scatter adding .

12 feet with a range of sizes . I had a roll of 50mm wide and 1.5mm thick neoprene that I picked up from Amazon a while ago . This was cut into various sizes . 16, 12, 8 , 6 and 4 with a few oblique ends and some triangle pieces for corner bits.

I ran the hand held sander over it  with a rough grit paper on it . This helps the next stage to adhere

A mix of decorators caulk and sealant with a brown acrylic craft paint added to it was then spread over the sections and these were left in the sun . I textured it with an old knife handle for some ruts

Once dried after a couple of hours I gave them a spray of a dark brown rattle can and then a dry brush .

PVA was added to edges and in some places in the middle and the Woodland Scenics Snow scatter was added . I used my spray glue to hit the trees and added the scatter

Job done . I just need a bit more river stuff sorting for later in May .
