Picking up those brushes again.

Hi and welcome to the occasional mutterings of Dave Doc, a military modeller and some time gamer. Gaming and model making has given me a real education, History & Geography(obvious really), Artistry, Politics, Economics, Logistics, Project Management -you try building miniature armies without the last 3.

I will use the blog to record my creations & the odd occasion I actually do some gaming.

I have always been inspired by the aesthetic side of gaming. Playing on well constructed terrain using excellently painted units is always a joy.

Sudan - More Ansar

I have been asked to do some work to help recreate some scenes for the battle of Omdurman in 1898 , so that has seen some extra additions to the collection such as the maxim guns and Young Churchill. Its also been a good driver to crack on an complete some more Ansar to add to the collection.

I still had 4 boxes worth of Perry plastics to make up , so I have done the bits that make up figures with jibbah in this lot (that will leave at least the same Beja still left to do) . I have done them on the large 20cm bases from Simon Miller's Big Red Bat store

Previously adding in the maxim's mean I also really need to do something to show the high level of casualties and as I had a couple of bags of Old Glory dead and wounded they have been complete too - all very gruesome

So about another 100 figures add to the collection.

Next up some 21st Lancers .. then the job will be done . We plan to do the filming in October over at Bradford working with the fine guys from Legendary Wargames...

Sudan - Last of the Baggara cavalry and the army completed.

ts been a week of horseflesh and riders (well the horses were done 3 weeks ago with oils) to complete the FINAL (honest....) unit for the Mahdist forces. This is 39 Baggara cavalry and a mounted commander to add to the existing 32 - so a total of 72 cavalry.

they are all Perry miniatures. Each of the spear carriers has had a flattened sharpened short spear soldered in the riders hand to make them more durable as the supplied spear is way too bendy and thick. So these lads have a tendency to "bite" you - or get stuck up your finger nail if you don't treat them with respect!

All 72 together :-

and the whole army completed over the various winter challenges  all laid out...

and a short video review of it.

This completes the Mahdist forces. This will let me run multiple simultaneous battles , or really increase the figure scale for a large one.

I still have lots of different options still do to for the Imperials, Egyptian and Sudanese units which will keep me busy for a while.

The battle of 2nd EL-Teb is planned for the weekend after next using Black Powder rules (a first run out using these for me)

Sudan - more forces for the Mahdi

The last few weeks has seen work on the remaining forces for the Mahdist armies. - They are very nearly finished - and i do mean completed.

First up is the last batches of foot troops , the final makings from the 20 boxes of Perry Mahdists. They are mixed in with metal casualty and command figures so 140 figures on 8 bases overall.

These are based on the large 20 x 6cm bases available from Simon Miller at Big Red Bat
The bigger the army has got , so have the bases - though it gives me lots of options for rule systems etc overall.

Next up has been the Mahdist river forces making an appearance with a raiding part on board
I am not sure where i picked the boat up from. It needed some work to fill in gun ports with milliput , but overall i think it works. I have added magnets to the base of the sail so it easily removable for better storage.
This takes the tally of Mahdist foot figures to for the collection to over 1000.

and yes more camels - lots more camels. With the complete clear out of the lead pile , 24 Perry camels and riders , and a further 9 "old school" Hinchliffe ones.

Altogether this takes the camel mounted troops to 82 figures , 27 bases worth   - now 100 does seem like a nice "round" number to aim for - and with York wargame show coming up I feel a top up coming on.

I also recently picked up a Tinywargames arid playmat - just a 6x4 for now to add to the existing home made. I am pretty impressed with it , so took the opportunity to set out most to the Mahdi's troops (i forgot the rifle skirmishers , and had not finished the camels at this point)  - so here is a quick video to give you the view of the size of the force available,

The last unit of cavalry for the Mahdi is now well under way and it will soon be time to add to the imperial forces again.

Sudan - Thundering Hooves!

I have finished up the remaining mounted troops for the Mahdists that were in the lead pile. This consisted of 12 Baggara Cavalry , and 12 rifle armed Beja camel riders - both lots by Perry. This take the total mounted force to 80 figures altogether  - not far of the original intent of 100. I might go for 50 Baggara , and 75 camels.

All the mounted out for a ride...

the new camel riders

the new Baggara.
The lead pile for the Sudan is steadily shrinking  -  may need a top up!

Next up some Indian army or Sudanese I think..

Sudan - Highland Skirmishers, Commanders and Mahdist guns

After the last play test it highlighted a few items I wanted to add, some specific highlander skirmishers and some Mahdist captured Krupp guns - and a Gatling gun - or perhaps more correctly that shoud be called "Where the hell did they get that from!"

Time to flush out the bad guys...

Also a few spare Naval Brigade figures from Connoissuer made into a skirmish order. I like these as they have the Sennet hats

A command set - complete with commander in full dress regalia! - no idea who made that - it was just in the lead pile.

and the gunnery arm for the Mahdists. Enough so i can run a few games simultaneously and each have some.

Sudan - The main protagonist.

With all my focus back on the Sudan I thought it was time for the main protagonist to make his appearance so here is the Mahdi himself.

Well I say "The" Mahdi... But this is the second figure for the collection. Well you always need competing Mahdis don't you? ...well you do in my mad world. I also want some table top options to confuse the Imperial player as well. Always nice to confuse the wargamers helicopter view with a bit of the "fog of war" - is that where the Mahdi really is? Which is the the true Mahdi? Mind it sounds like a good way to start a civil or religious war too.

Sudan - Painting your horde

I have had a few people ask about how I painted my large number of Mahdist figures in a relatively short time. So here is a little walk through of how I did the 144 figures I did recently. I will say I am very accurate with a paint brush - I rarely ever need to "touch up" as I put it where its needed - just years of practice and good brushes

Rule number 1 - sort out your head - no seriously - you have to accept you are painting a host of figures and that painting each to the best standard you can  with multiple highlights washes etc is NOT going to achieve the objective - Quantity has a Quality all of its own.

Ok - now we have that bit done

Prepare you figures. In this case they are Perry plastics a mix of the early Beja and then some of the later Jibbah wearing troops which for this is I will call Ansar. As these figures are an irregular type troops i have based them up here after assembly , prior to any undercoat. There is a reasonable room between them - they are on a mix of 60x40 or 120 x 40 bases with differing numbers of figures on each. Mounted on Warbases 2mm MDF curved corner bases.

The first decision is to identify the predominate colour - for the Beja it is the dark skin tone, and for the Ansar it is the white of the Jibbah. This then decides the colours for the main undercoat - let this do a large amount of work for you.

In this case I used an enamel Humbrol 186 brown , and a matt white- both applied with the airbrush

All the acrylic paints used after this are thinned with Windsor and Newton acrylic flow enhancer - slows drying and allows them to spread and flow better from your brush. I use a plastic pipette to add it to the paint mix. It can also be used to wash figures as well

A walk through the Beja. - Working on all 62 together.

Undercoated

Add black to the hair and any metal areas of the weapons
Wash the entire figue with a thin Vallejo Sepia wash - or thinned paint - any darker brown would do. Once dry give the "hair" a drybrush in mid brown colour to break up the all black.

Paint the "cloth" - this is done using 4 different colours from - Off White, Ivory, Iraqi sand, Desert sand etc -  pick a colour paint all the cloth on that figure with it. No two figures next to each other in the same colour if you can. Once dry do another thin wash of Sepia (you could also use Army Painter I guess here too.)
Refer to rule 1.. no extra highlight
Add some rock ot bases - paint spear shafts - a brown colour - scabbard - a leather colour. Rifles a suitable brown in this case a Vallejo Hull red
Refer to rule 1.. no extra highlight
At this point I give everything a Matt Varnish spray - this helps to draw everything together and give you an idea what will require highlighting.  I added a highlight to the skin tone , muscle tops, noses, chins, cheeks , hands etc etc using Vallejo Flat Earth thinned to at least 50% with Windsor and Newton acrylic flow enhancer. Because its so thin it flows really well. Hit them with varnish again

Add base texture , and paint the metallics - yes after varnish as it keeps them bright. add flags etc.In this case i used rough sand over PVA , once dry i gave it a drybrush in cream / offwhite colour and don't forget the base edges.  Add a few grass tufts.
DONE

At this point if you want to go back and highlight the top of the clothes etc you could do if you really want to , but refer to rule 1 first!

A walk through the Ansar - working on all 82 together

First step after the all white undercoat.  - add the skin tone  this is same enamel colour as the Beja a sort of dark terracotta - it can be mixed with a darker colour if it took your fancy - this is thinned and washed on
 all skin tone done
Add the random patch designs to the Jibbah  - in Red, Blue, Yellow etc no two the same next to each other. Some Jibbahs have a dark edging pattern - do this in a dark blue or black - again to random number of figures
Paint weapon metal black - and wooden parts of the weapons in browns
Give everything a thin wash of Vallejo Sepia - or Raw umber - keep it thin though - better two coats than one thick one remove any pooling of the wash with a brush. Once dry hit them with Matt Varnish
Highlight skin tone with thinned Flat earth. Add base material - add flags - highlight bases material and re-varnish - add metallic colours and tufts
DONE

At this point if you want to go back and highlight the top of the clothes etc you could do if you really want to , but refer to rule 1 first!

do the "what do they look like on the table from 6 feet away test" fix anything you are not happy with - funny you are unlikely to find anything..

 REPEAT!

These took just over a week to paint - with a few hours each day. They took almost as long to assesmble as they had to be cut of the sprue and assembled,

I have my final 120 of these to do later in the Spring..

Sudan - Ambulances, baggage, and Mahdist Cavalry

The latest additions to the Sudan forces. I recently placed an order with Castaway Arts in Australia for their Ambulance And baggage camels and mules.I must say service from them was top notch , good communications all the way through , very reasonable postage rates and they arrived in just over a week - I will be back for more.

I had in stock a couple of camels for the Camel Corps - walking and laid down, so I have done these too as the last major unit to complete for the collection is now on order.

I also completed another 8 Perry Baggara cavalry to add to the 12 I did last year. I took the opportunity to change the bading to a looser more irregular style.

These finish off my last entries in the Painting Challenge - I seem to have finished top ! It has been a busy few months.

Sudan.. The horde is growing

The drums have beating and the army has assembled - its now a full 6 foot wide!

All together its is now 880 foot, 36 mounted camel riders, 12 Baggara cavalry, 1 gun. There are another 120 foot on order to take me to 1000.. Then a top up of mounted to take them toward 100, and a couple more guns. So nearly there..It may be time for the main man to make his appearance too

The latest batch are shown below.
