Picking up those brushes again.

Hi and welcome to the occasional mutterings of Dave Doc, a military modeller and some time gamer. Gaming and model making has given me a real education, History & Geography(obvious really), Artistry, Politics, Economics, Logistics, Project Management -you try building miniature armies without the last 3.

I will use the blog to record my creations & the odd occasion I actually do some gaming.

I have always been inspired by the aesthetic side of gaming. Playing on well constructed terrain using excellently painted units is always a joy.

Sudan - It's a numbers game - and let there be light!

Having had the Sudan collection out and being used recently I took the opportunity to be able to move them over to some new storage boxes , and decided to get around to actually counting what is in the collection. Its also helped me work out what else I want to add to the collection overall to "ahem" finish the collection - as much as you ever do.

So as of July 2016 - here is the latest position.

For the Imperials I want to add Indian Army units, Guards, 5th Royal Irish Lancers and Sudanese Infanty. For the Mahdists - I will add in extra cavalry/camels and take the variosu foot upto 1000.That should keep me in work over the winter season.

My actual next job though will be moving to magnetised bases and storage options to stop the blighters sliding around when being moved... that fien chap Simon Miller is helping out sourcing some ferro material that fits inside Really Useful Boxes for me - cheers Simon

I recently picked up a couple of new "Daylight Company Naturalight Portable LED Lamps" from Hobbycraft in the UK. I got the two for £30 (rather than £20 each), including free delivery as I am signed up to thier Hobbycraft Club on which you get various offer e mails - so a 25% one was nice to get.

They will come in very useful for my travelling painting kit, and for extra lighting for photographs too.

    1. Of course I don't "need" them , but I do want them, there are some interesting Imperial units to represent . The 1000 mahdists was always just an mad idea.. But hell its near enough now.

It will mean I can run multiple large games .. Just like the SImon Miller character!

  4. Yes, this is an extraordinary collection! My only question is to ask what scale you are collecting? If it is 15 mm I am truly in awe. If 28 mm I am staggered even to think of the painting time expended!!!

  5. Nice I would hate to think how many Sudan figures I have.....while I have been away I expanded my Egyptian cavalry by 12 and added another two British officers (all painted ready to go when I get home).

  7. Impressive Dave and, having seen it, even more so for the quality involved.
Would like to hear more about the lamps - weight, light quality, can they be left on permanent charge? They look the part and seem a good replacement for my LED lamps on my desk.

    1. Paul - cheers
The lamp can be used 3 ways - on battery (3 4 hours) , plugged into a usb source , or via usb/mains adaptor.

There are 3 light setting , up to 55w equivalent - its a daylight equivalent spectrum. Lux output at 30cm (12"): 510 Lux
      Light colour temperature: 6,000°K

      weight is 200grams -

only adjustable on the foldable plain through the vertical - so not fully but as you can move it easily not much of an issue i think

  8. Great to actually hear the current tally, I knew it was going to be high, but my word! You'd best crack on prepping those guards for the winter challenge.

  12. Wow you have been busy Dave - that's a heck of a lot of figures and when they are all painted as good as yours then that's a collection worth talking about! Splendid.
