Picking up those brushes again.

Hi and welcome to the occasional mutterings of Dave Doc, a military modeller and some time gamer. Gaming and model making has given me a real education, History & Geography(obvious really), Artistry, Politics, Economics, Logistics, Project Management -you try building miniature armies without the last 3.

I will use the blog to record my creations & the odd occasion I actually do some gaming.

I have always been inspired by the aesthetic side of gaming. Playing on well constructed terrain using excellently painted units is always a joy.

Going Loco...

Well more a visit to the local model railway club annual show (Cleveland Model Railway Club). This is normally a pretty good one , and this year again was a decent standard. There are always good tips , materials , tools and inspiration to be picked up. There is I think a lot of cross over in the skills between railway modelling and wargaming.

The large steel work lay our looked good - just needed more tanks!

Certainly some fine modelling skill involved

then it was look for some bits n bobs
I picked up an A2 and A4 cutting mat to refresh the work desk.

A static grass applicator, new "helping hands" tool, small anvil and pin vice

Some LED lights for the Gangster buldings , plus a couplE of "wagons" from the everything a £1 casualty bin - to rework for the Sudan railway..

Overall a good few hours out.

  1. I love model train layouts! There is a massive one on the top floor of a shopping mall in downtown Berlin that my son and I visited three or four times last summer. It is, naturally, of Berlin, and they seem to be adding new sections to it all the time. Really something to see if you find yourself in the city sometime.

    Best Regards,

    Stokes

  3. Looks like a great show. I've have dabbled in model RRing, but prefer the social and research aspects of wargaming. I agree that there's a lot of learning opportunities between hobbies.

  4. Good fun are model train shows. Ours is in September. Always a great place to grab some of those oddities that are often missing from game stores. Looks like you did well with your finds.

  6. Really nice!

I'm helping my Dad reinvigorate our layout in the attic these days, and it's great how much of my 'gaming knowledge is coming in handy.

  8. Interesting day out. Given that railway modellers have more mainstream appeal I wondered whether the pricing of their tools etc. were more competitive then those at a wargames show. Any idea on the comparison Dave?

  10. Some mad skills on display at the model railway show, Dave. I am greatly relieved you did, however, manage to exit with some loot ;) Static grass applicator - I shall be watching carefully and with interest!
