Picking up those brushes again.

Hi and welcome to the occasional mutterings of Dave Doc, a military modeller and some time gamer. Gaming and model making has given me a real education, History & Geography(obvious really), Artistry, Politics, Economics, Logistics, Project Management -you try building miniature armies without the last 3.

I will use the blog to record my creations & the odd occasion I actually do some gaming.

I have always been inspired by the aesthetic side of gaming. Playing on well constructed terrain using excellently painted units is always a joy.

Gaming ACW - Battle of Seven Pines May 1862

The first of the monthly meet ups with the North Riding mob . Today saw an early Civil War battle. The Union army under Mclellan has moved up the Virginia Peninsula and is split North and South of the Chickahomey river a days march from Richmond . Johnston sees his opportunity and attacks the divisions south of the swollen river .

All photos courtesy of Simon T as I forgot to take any .

Some Union units have built redoubts but they won’t hold the rebel attack for long .

The union command structure managed to cope with the attack initially and was able to re-organise itself. Importantly they managed to rally 5 of the 6 brigades broken on first contact and establish a second line .

The games went into a second day with reinforcements from both sides but the Union realised they couldn’t win , and fell back to defend the river line in one area and were trying for draw by not being hammered on the other side 9f the table . Johnston had joined Longstreet and they took the division forward overwhelming Keyes HQ and destroying brigades . Richmond was saved .

A good game from Jerry and Simon . The new rules tweaks worked well .
